How to do a SkillBridge with a non DOD-approved company

Did you know you can do a SkillBridge with a non-SkillBridge company?

Note: if you’re in the Army, there’s another route that’s even easier than the instructions below. Click here to learn more.

If you're interested in a specific company that's not yet a DoD SkillBridge partner, here’s how to navigate the process.

  1. Get Started Early: If you have your sites set on a company you're passionate about, reach out well enough in advance (ideally at least a year) to give them time to submit all the paperwork or select a partner that can help them. Contact the company's HR department or hiring manager.
  2. Educate the Company: Many companies aren't aware of SkillBridge. Explain the SkillBridge program and its benefits. Highlight that they can bring on you (and other servicemembers) at no cost for up to 180 days. Share resources from the official DoD SkillBridge website (https://skillbridge.osd.mil/) to help them understand the program (or fill out this form and we’ll help you both navigate the process).
  3. Assist with Application: If the company shows interest, offer to help them through the application process. Direct them to the DoD SkillBridge Industry Partner Questionnaire, which gathers details about the proposed internship opportunity.
  4. Develop a Training Plan: Work with the company to create a detailed training plan for your role. This should include objectives, a schedule of events, and defined tasks. They’ll need to submit this with their application.
  5. Be Patient and Persistent: The approval process can take time. Stay in touch with the company and follow up regularly.
  6. Have a Backup Plan: While pursuing this option, also apply for approved SkillBridge opportunities as a safety net.

Remember, even if the company doesn't get approved in time for your transition, you've still made a valuable connection and demonstrated initiative – qualities that could lead to future opportunities.

Make SkillBridge work for you.

We’ve seen many examples of servicemembers helping companies figure this out… and then land full time roles with the company even when they said they weren’t hiring.

Because efforts like this prove how valuable the “figure it out” mentality is among servicemembers.

Good luck! And fill out this form if you want some help with all 👆 these steps.
